BJP leader shares old letter by Priyanka Gandhi confirming sale of MF Husain painting to Rana Kapoor

BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh on Sunday shared a letter purportedly written by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi that confirms whether Rana Kapoor bought an MF Husain painting for Rs 2 crore.

Taking to Twitter, Singh shared a letter signed by Priyanka Gandhi, thanking Rana Kapoor for purchasing a portrait of Rajiv Gandhi, painted by MF Husain.

“I acknowledge receipt of your letter as well as your payment of Rs 2 crore representing the full and final payment towards subject painting. I trust you are aware of the historical value of this work and will ensure its placement in an environment that befits its stature,” the letter read.

In a statement to the Enforcement Directorate, Yes Bank co-founder Rana Kapoor had claimed that he was forced to buy a painting from Priyanka Gandhi and the proceeds of the sale were used for the medical treatment of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New York.

Kapoor also told the ED that Ahmed Patel, a close confidante of Sonia Gandhi, had told him that by supporting the Gandhi family at an opportune time for medical treatment of Sonia Gandhi, I (Kapoor) had performed a good deed for the family and it would be duly considered for the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award.

The banker is currently in judicial custody following his arrest in a money laundering case in March 2020.

Sources said the painting was the property of Congress and not Priyanka Gandhi, but still, it was sold to Kapoor by Priyanka Gandhi. They added that Rana Kapoor, the then director of Yes Bank, was convinced by Congress leader Milind Deora.

Every amount Rana Kapoor invested in properties is proceeds of crime and so are the Rs 2 crore which was used to buy this painting, a source told India Today.
