Mumbai top cop shares video of Rana couple having tea in custody after claims of ill-treatment

Reacting to the allegations of inhuman treatment by police officers by Amravati MP Navneet Rana, Mumbai Commissioner of Police, Sanjay Pandey, has shared a video showing the MP and her MLA husband Ravi Rana having tea in the Khar Police Station. He posted the video with a caption that read,
“Do we say anything more,”

MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana were taken into custody based on an FIR under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with assault or use of criminal force against a public servant in the execution of his duty.

On Monday, Navneet Rana wrote a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla alleging torture following her arrest over her threats to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Uddhav Thackeray’s residence. She alleged that she was abused because of her caste.

In the letter, Rana alleged, “I made repeated demands for drinking water throughout the night. However, no drinking water was provided. To my shock and disbelief, the police staff present told me that I belong to Schedule Caste and hence they will not give me water in the same glass.”

“I submit that the treatment meted out to me in the lock-up of the Khar Police Station was worse than what animals are treated,” she said.

Rana demanded the strictest action to be taken against the Commissioner, Mumbai Police, concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), concerned Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and the police staff.

Ranas were also booked under IPC section 153 (A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), and section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act (violation of prohibitory orders of police).

Following this, Lok Sabha secretariat Privilege and Ethics branch sought a factual report from the Maharashtra government.
