US man charged in rape of 10-year-old girl after politicians cast doubt on story

Gershon Fuentes, 27, was arrested after police said he confessed to raping the girl on at least two occasions, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

Child services notified police after finding out the girl was pregnant on June 22.

DNA collected at the abortion clinic is being tested against samples from Fuentes.

Fuentes is being held in the local jail on a $US2 million bond.

His arrest came the day after Ohio Attorney-General Dave Yost cast doubt on the truth of the story as it was initially reported.

Speaking to Fox News, Yost said yesterday there was “not a whisper” the story was true.

“We don’t know who the originating doctor in Ohio was — if they even exist,” he said.

“I know our prosecutors and cops in this state, there’s not one of them that wouldn’t be turning over every rock in their jurisdiction if they had the slightest hint that this occurred.”

Today he struck a different tone, though he made no acknowledgement of what he said the day before.

“My heart aches for the pain suffered by this young child,” he said.

“I am grateful for the diligent work of the Columbus Police Department in securing a confession and getting a rapist off the street.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine had also cast doubt on the story.

“Reading in the paper, it came as you know, from a story out of Indiana from a doctor over there,” he said.

When today’s charges were made public, his Democratic opponent in the upcoming election, Nan Whaley, was outraged.

“Mike DeWine’s abortion ban forced a 10-year-old rape survivor to leave Ohio to get the care she needed. Then he and his buddies attacked her story,” she tweeted.

“Now, all he can come up with in response is, ‘No comment’.”

The case has become a flashpoint in the post-Roe abortion debate.

Abortion is now illegal after six weeks of pregnancy in the state of Ohio, after Roe v Wade was overturned, thanks to a bill signed by DeWine in 2019.

There are no exceptions for rape or incest, only the “serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman”.

Explosion of protests erupt across US after abortion rights ruling

A bill introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives on Monday would outlaw all abortion at any point of a pregnancy.

Ohio has long been regarded as the quintessential swing state in US politics, but has in recent years trended heavily conservative.

A poll from Pew Research found 48 per cent of Ohioans believed abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 47 per cent believed it should be illegal in all or most cases.
